The illness was characterized by bloody diarrhea, with a high frequency of serious complications, including hemolytic-uremic syndrome, a condition that requires urgent treatment. The outbreak was originally thought to have been caused by an enterohemorrhagic strain of E. coli, but it was later shown to have been caused by an Global situation of E. coli O104:H4 infections. The table below shows the total number of globally reported (as of 06 July) cases of and deaths from E. coli (EAggEC VTEC) O104:H4 infection since the beginning of the outbreak in Germany on 1 May 2011. In total, 16 countries in Europe and North America have reported 3941 cases of E. coli O104:H4 infection, including 52 fatalities.

What are shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STECs) and what is their natural habitat? historical E. coli O104:H4 isolates from 2001, 2004, and 2009 are related to this outbreak, they do not appear to be ancestral. To confirm that the diversity found in the French outbreak was absent in the German outbreak, we analyzed sequence data from Validation of PCR assays for detection of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O104:H4 and O121 in food Johanna Tawe Populärvetenskaplig sammanfattning Escherichia coli är den vanligaste bakterien i den normala tarmfloran hos människor.

The outbreak was declared over by the end of July. By this point more than 4,000 cases, and 50 deaths, had been reported. HUS is a life-threatening disease

The outbreak was caused by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) of the serotype O104:H4. Fenugreek sprouts were identified as most likely vehicle of  coli O104:H4. Escherichia coli O104:H4 and Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome: The Analysis Begins. Research output: Contribution to journal › Debate/Note/Editorial. Overview

This large outbreak was caused by an unusual strain that is most similar to enteroaggregative E E. coli. O104:H4 outbreak resulted in thousands of cases of enterohaemorrhagic illness, with approxi-mately 25% of these progressing to develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). This high rate of progression to HUS was the first indicator that the bacterial cause of illness was not a typical enterohaemorrhagic .

The E. coli identified in the outbreak had serotype O104:H4, which is extremely rare and hadn’t been associated with HUS before. How is it spreading? Initially the source of the outbreak was unclear, but due to the wide distribution of cases and the usual route of E. coli transmission, contaminated foodstuffs were thought to be the most likely source.

Management should focus on promop kidney protection by mantaining adequate renal perfusion in addition to avoidance of diuretics and nephrotoxic agents. The E. coli O104:H4 was isolated from her stool speci-men. Fortunately, the patient finally recovered with obvious sequelae through timely proper treatment with plasmapher-esis and hemodialysis for three weeks.
